Chamerops Excelsa (also known as the Chusan Palm or Hardy Palm) is a single-stemmed palm with large fan-shaped dark green leaves. Small yellow flowers emerge close to the leaf bases in early summer. The hardiest palm grown in Great Britain (it will survive to -10) it is very graceful and totally evergreen and will grow over 5 metres in height. It will grow in a sunny or partial shaded position and grows in anything but waterlogged soils. When the lower leaves become brown and scruffy, usually because of age, some maintenance is required. The leaf tips are the first part to look untidy but this can be remedied by lightly trimming them off with a pair of seccateurs or sharp scissors. This process can be repeated many times until more drastic action is required. Once this stage has been reached the whole leaf down to the base is removed.
