The Cupressocyparis Castlewellan Gold is a genus hybrid between Chamaecyparis and Cupressus. It is a fast-growing, pyramidal, evergreen tree with scaly leaves held on flattened to quadrangular branchlet sprays. The foliage of 'Castlewellan' is light green in summer, turning golden yellow in autumn and winter. It produces round, brown female cones and ovoid, yellow male cones, 1/16-1/8 inch long. This is fast growing conifer, though as potted its size is easily manageable. The tree benefits from regular clipping with shears which encourages lush dense green foliage and helps keep its shape. The wood and crushed foliage gives off a lovely pungent aroma which makes clipping a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It accepts a wide range of growing conditions and a collection of these plants act as a superior screen or windbreak.
