The Yucca Gloriosa (also known as the Adams Needle or the Spanish Needle) is a beautiful architectural plant which looks too good to survive frost but it is fully hardy. It is best grown in dry, well drained soil in full sun or in the shade. It has big, bold rosettes of wide, stiff leaves, each one ending in a sharp point. This should be taken into consideration when siting.  It is very tough and will grow almost anywhere but avoid excessively wet conditions in the winter.  Remove old flower spikes as soon as they fade, cutting as low down into the plant as possible. During the flowering season keep a look out for black aphids which can breed at an alarming rate.
